Welcome

This website is about the village of Whilton in Northamptonshire. It's a place to find useful information about events and clubs and has the potential to provide a 'virtual forum' for comments and suggestions about the village.

Parish Council meeting - the next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th September - see here for the agenda.  Minutes of the meetings held on 14th July and 25th August are available here.

Parking in the village - a reminder from the Parish Council
We are all aware of the problems of parking in the village.  They are not going to get any better but so as to avoid any unpleasantness or legal action, remember that parking should not cause an obstruction to road users and pedestrians.  Also, you should not park within ten metres of a junction and not opposite a junction.

"Living in the Gap" - a new book covering the history of Whilton from the end of Saxon times to the late twentieth century is expected to launched on 21st October.  See here for more details.

There are various vacancies for people to help in the Parish.

A Parish Councillor is required and someone to carry out general maintenance. See here for more details of what's entailed.

Free Pass Plus courses - Northamptonshire Casualty Reduction Partnership has teamed up with BSM to provide 120 FREE Pass Plus courses worth £180 each to young people living in the South Northants/ Daventry area as part of a Department for Transport funded trial project aimed at reducing road casualties in rural areas.

Pass Plus consists of six modules about driving in different conditions aimed at improving the skill and knowledge of newly qualified young drivers. There is no test at the end, but if successfully completed, the student will be issued with a certificate and eligible for insurance discounts with some insurers.

Applicants must live in the NN11, NN12, NN13, OX17 or MK19 areas, be aged 17 -25 years old, have passed their driving test within the last 18 months and hold a current valid UK driving licence.

An application form or further information can be obtained by emailing: passplus@northamptonshire.gov.uk

Other recent additions to the site include the informal notes of the Annual Parish Meeting of 26th April, the latest Church news plus the times of services in September and October.

Community Speed Watch - the Community Engineer is supportive of a 20mph speed limit through the village but so far there has been very little response from residents to assist.  A coordinator and minimum of 10 volunteers to monitor traffic are required and so, if we're serious about reducing this increasing safety hazard, now's our opportunity. The 50th Anniversary of opening of the M1 was on 2nd November 2009 and on that day the BBC broadcast an 'Inside Out' - East' programme which featured interviews with local villagers whose homes were affected by its construction. In particular, the grandson of a determined campaigner who lived at Whilton Locks and managed to get the M1's planned route altered, thereby avoiding demolition of the cottages there. The progamme also contained excellent amateur film excerpts which recorded the impact on the rural landscape at the time.

If you've not visited the site recently you might be interested to know that we've introduced some new items. You can now find the current newsletter and previous editions going back to mid 2007. On the Parish Council page you will be able to find notices of forthcoming meetings and minutes of previous ones. The Parish Design Statement has been formally adopted by Daventry District Council as a supplementary planning document - you can see it here.

You might be interested to know that in 2008 we were awarded 1st place in the East Midlands in Bloom competition (small village category) with 161 points out of a possible 200. We are now holders of the Silver Rose Bowl and we also received a silver gilt standard certificate to join the others hanging in the village hall. In their report the Judges stated "the residents of Whilton continue to maintain very high standards in the presentation of private and public areas. We were impressed with all aspects of the judging tour of the village which typifies most people’s idea of English rural life."
